Battle of The Bones (Thort)

100 rooms · levels 20–35

Thort's Living Chamber

This large room looks like it was designed and built big enough for anyone's desires, but still the floor is covered in various piles of clothes, papers, boxes and toys. The walls are covered in shelves, which, like the floor are bulging with strange and bizarre items. The only surface that is remotely clean is the large four-posted bed in the corner.

Living Room

A large roaring fire in the north wall is the centerpiece of this room. Two large fluffy couches sit facing the fire. There is a chessboard set up on the small table between the couches. A decanter of brandy and two large brandy glasses also sit on the table. Large tapestries hang from all the walls. The scenes on them are of famous battles from myths and legends. The image of Thort features in quite a few.

Storage Room

This room is extremely dull. Apart from a couple of empty boxes, nothing else of interest is in here.

Temporary Laboratory

This is basically a stone box. There seems to be no way in or out. There are burn marks on some of the walls, and also a few chips here and there.

A Small Path Leading Off The Main Trail

A small thin path leads off the main trail. It looks like it could be a good place to stop and camp. The smell of recently cooked food can be detected to the north. To the north-east is a small hill and the sound of running water can be heard.

Small Campsite

This flat area of ground in the foothills is a perfect site to make camp. Someone before you has erected a small lean-to type shelter, and built a small fireplace out of rocks. The sounds of running water come from the east. To the west is a large tree, it could even be a fruit tree. To the north, a thin trail goes further up the valley to a small monument.

Waterfall

A small waterfall cascades off the top of a small cliff into a small pool at the bottom. The cliff has been well worn over time and looks far too slippery to climb. Further to the west is a flat area where it may be suitable to set camp.

Edge Of The Campsite

Growing here on the edge of the campsite is a large apple tree. Birds have eaten a fair bit of the fruit in the branches but a couple can be seen here and there. Soft green grass grows in the shade of the tree. It looks a comfortable place to sit down and rest a while. From further to the east comes the sound of running water.

Thin Trail

The trail weaves its way through the foot hills. To the north is a small monument. Further to the south is a flat grassy area which may be a good spot to camp. The sounds of running water trickle in from the south-east.

Small Monument

The trail comes to an end at a small stone monument. Another newer trail leads further north. Carved in large letters on the monument is an inscription. Some more words have also been hastily carved at the bottom.

Winding Trail

Further north, there are fewer trees, and those that still do live are stunted little scrub-trees. The tussock is so tough and brown that even the few mangy looking mountain goats around have left it alone. The soil has a dusty white pallor to it and it looks like nothing will ever grow in it again.

Nearing The Battlefield

Travelling further north, the trail thins out to nothing. Outcroppings of bone jut from the soil, until finally the bones outnumber the rocks themselves, and the trail moves through a wasteland of remains. Down the trail that winds south is a small monument.

Entrance Of The Battle Of The Bones

This is the southern edge of a huge area of bones. To the north there are bones littered around as far as the eye can see. Not just a couple here and there, thousands. The depth could be estimated to be at least twelve inches. All that can be seen to the north is the white glare of light reflecting off bones. The loss of life here must have been horrendous. Further south the bones thin out and a thin trail leads towards a small monument.

Edge Of The Battle Of The Bones

To the south the bones start to thin out. A thin trail can be seen to the south east that heads away from this place of death. To the north is nothing but bones. It almost looks like a white sea, with a couple of tiny islands of scared land poking up through the surface.

Edge Of The Battle Of The Bones

The bones thin out a little here and even small patches of earth can be seen in the spaces. A little further to the south is a small and stunted tree that looks as though it has been struggling to grow, as though the taint from the battle that happened here has somehow bled the life out of the plants.

Bone Covered Battlefield

Bones cover the ground here to a depth of about a foot. The skeletons of two humans and a dwarf surrounded by the skeletons of three times as many orcs and goblins can be seen here. The skull of one of the goblinoid skeletons looks like it has been crushed. The skeleton of the dwarf still holds an axe that has long since rusted and fallen apart. To the north, is a shallow hollow in the sea of bones. The bones don't feel very stable to stand on here.

Hollow In The Bones

It looks like someone or something has arranged the bones here to make some kind of guard post. Larger bones like the femur and humerus have been used to support the sides, and the bottom of the hollow is lined with skulls. An uneasy feeling hangs in the air at the bottom of the hollow.

Nearing The Mound

To the north, it looks as though someone has arranged some bones into some kind of structure. Most of the support bones of the structure are larger than humanoid and look like they have come from several different kinds of animals. To the south is a slight hollow in the ground. There are some loose bones here someone could slip on one and fall.

Under The Southern Side Of The Structure

This strange structure has many small gaps which are just big enough for someone to wiggle through. On the ground here several bones have been arranged into a strange circular pattern. There are five skulls in a circle surrounded by several smaller bones radiating outwards.

Under The South-Eastern Side Of The Structure

Narrow gaps between the bones weave passages in amongst the bones stacked in the corner of the structure. To the east and south, the sight of bones stretches on for miles. To the north and west more gaps allow someone to crawl further under the structure.

Under The Eastern Side Of The Structure

A rusted lance that pokes up from the bones here has been used as part of the supporting structure. A goblin skeleton is skewered on the lance. The lance is solidly fixed in place and will not budge.

Under The North-Eastern Side Of The Structure

Under the structure is what looks like the ribcage of a horse. It seems as though someone, or something has made a nest there. To the north and east and all that can be seen is bones. So many must have died here. South and west, narrow gaps are visible between the bone supports. Also, to the west is what looks like a circular bone staircase.

Under The Northern Side Of The Structure

A circular bone staircase leads up to a small hole in the roof of this bone structure. The newel for this flight is made from several vertebrae joined together end to end, and the steps themselves have been formed from many feet. The entire staircase looks like it has been fused together with some kind of magic.

Under The North-Western Side Of The Structure

Tangled in the supports is the skeleton of an orc. Its right humerus has been severed cleanly. The rest of the arm lies on the ground, the hand still grasping a now rusted broad sword. Looking west and north there are bones as far as can be seen. To the east is a staircase, and further south is a small opening in the bones.

Under The Western Side Of The Structure

Someone would have to wiggle and squirm their way through the supports of the structure here. The gaps are quite small. To the west is a huge field of bones, and to the north and south can be seen some more little gaps under the structure.

Under The South-Western Side Of The Structure

The bones in this area all look like they have been seared by fire. Many of the bones are black and crumble when weight is put on them. The bones in the support are white though and have obviously been brought in from other areas. The tract of bones seems to extend for miles both west and south.

South-Western Edge

A skeleton of a human lies atop the bones dressed in a rusty set of ringmail. Three arrow holes are visible in the chest, although only the shaft of one arrow can be seen poking out. To the west the bones thin out a little, but in all other directions, only bones can be seen.

Scattered Bones

All the bones in this area look like they have been scattered here. Not one of the skeletons is whole, and something seems strange with how they are placed. It looks like the bones could give way underfoot at any second.

Skeletal Remains

This area is covered in crushed remains of what looks like orcish skeletons. It looks like whatever attacked them was big and heavy, kind of like, say, an elephant. The ground here does feel a little unstable to walk over though. To the north is some kind of structure made entirely from bones.

Two Skeletons

Sitting atop the layer of bones are two skeletons, one dwarf, and one hobgoblin. The dwarf has his hands closed around the haft of a rusty looking axe which is imbedded in the top of the hobgoblin's skull. The hobgoblin is holding an equally rusty long sword, which is stuck through the dwarf's chest. It looks as if they died simultaneously. The bones underfoot seem to move slightly when walked on.

Lost In The Bones

The bones seem to extend for miles. Someone could wander around forever and not realize that it is just making them more and more lost. The only thing close that can be used as a landmark is the rise in the bones to the north-east.

Lost In The Bones

On the top of the bones here is a strange looking skeleton wearing tattered leather armor. It almost seems to have an expression of pain on its face. To the south and west the bones lie as far as can be seen. Someone could walk for weeks and still not reach the edge. The only thing that gives any sense of direction is a rise in the ground to the north-east.

Battlefield

This looks like what was once a front line. Many skeletons are here, goblin on one side, human on the other. A human skeleton is still astride the skeleton of his horse where they both fell in battle. Strapped to the skeleton's left arm is a large shield with the symbol of a golden lion on the front. The shield has long since been taken by rust. To the east is some kind of construction made of bones. Bones move and slide underfoot.

Bone Battlefield

Bones lie around as far as the eye can see. Care has to be taken to walking through the remains so as to not to disturb the remains. Here and there you see rusted weapons in amongst the bones.

Lost In The Bones

It seems like walking south-west will not get anyone anywhere in particular in any great hurry. This place is huge. It could be so easy to get lost. The only landmark to be seen is a small rise to the east.

Lost In The Bones

If it were not for the small elevation to the east to help guide the way, one could easily become disoriented in this place. Everything is the same color, white. The bright reflected light is difficult to look at.

Hollow In The Bones

A shallow hole has been excavated in the bones here, and the bones have been stacked around the edge to give it the impression that it is deeper than it actually is. The soil at the bottom of the hole is a sickly gray color, and it looks like it is devoid of any life. Nothing could ever grow here.

Approaching The Structure

To the east is a small construction of some kind which seems to be formed entirely of bones. Although the top of the structure is only a few feet off the ground, standing on top would give a great view of the surrounding area. Not that there is much to see except for bones. To the west is a slight depression in the bone surface.

More Bones

Over to one side is a stack of sets of armor and weapons. These have long since rusted and fallen into decay. It looks like they were being collected at sometime, and whoever was stacking them was interrupted in their scavenging.

Combat Zone

It looks like a major battle happened here. A small group of humans and dwarves held a defensive position against a horde of orcs. It is hard to tell who won this skirmish, but it is easy to see that, again, many lives were lost.

Lost In The Bones

Bones stick up out of the ground here and impede progress a little. It is very difficult to maintain a constant direction. If it wasn't for that small rise in the bones to the east, one would soon find themselves lost.

Lost In The Bones

Bones lie as far as can be seen. A flat plain of white. No variation apart from a small rise to the south-east. One would wonder if they would ever get out of this place.

Corner Of The Structure

To the south-east is the corner of some kind of bone structure. A support for this strange construction has been made from the skeleton of an animal. It looks similar to a horse, but it has spikes sticking upward from its spine. A couple of small skulls have been hung on these spikes.

Lost In The Bones

The bones seem to extend on forever. If it was not for the rise off in the distance to the south-east, one could be here forever, and that is longer than their food and water supplies would probably last.

Beside The Structure

A bizarre bone construction stands to the south. It is about ten feet off the ground and does not look at all natural. The entire creation is made from bones from the soldiers and animals that fell in the battle here many years ago.

Lone Soldier

Sitting atop the bones here is a single skeleton, still with tattered leather armor and a rusty short sword. By the way the bones and weapon lie, it looks like the soldier killed himself. Hard to tell if it was magic that caused him to kill himself, or just that the enormity of the death and destruction here drove him insane.

Lost In The Bones

A chilling wind blows in from the north. As it gusts past the bones on the ground it gives off a shrill whistling sound. It sounds like a thousand voices are speaking all at once, pleading for their spirits to be set free. A chill rises in the air, and it is not just from the cool wind.

Lost In The Bones

One could wander around in this god forsaken place for ages. Everything looks the same. Big bones, little bones, long bones, and short ones. Nothing but bones and the scent of death. But wait, is that a small rise in the bones to the south?

Hollow In The Bones

Another hollow in the bones. Skeletons and old corroding armor and weapons have been stacked up around the edges. A few bones lie half buried in the gray sickly looking earth at the bottom.

Catapult

The crumbling remains of a large catapult lie here. Most of the leather has rotted away and the iron rusted. The wood is all dry and brittle. One of the axles has been removed and is nowhere to be seen. There is a small hollow in the bones to the north and some kind of strange structure to the south. Part of the catapult seems like a good place to grab for support as some of the bones give way underfoot.

Pikemen

The skeletons of about twenty orcs and about the same number of broken or decayed pikes are scattered around here. The ground moves slightly underfoot, and it does not feel that safe standing here.

Heavy Cavalry

Poking up through the bones here are many skeletons of horses in rusted heavy plate barding, broken lances, smashed shields, corroding morning stars and helmets. Several of the horse skeletons are skewered with broken pikes, and the riders' skulls look like they have been smashed in with a club or maul.

Lost In The Bones

Looking out to the north and east, all that can be seen is a huge white expanse, no landmarks, no changes, just bones. How many must have died here? Hundreds, thousands, tens of thousands. Too many.

Lost In The Bones

If it wasn't for that small rise in the bones to the south-west it would be very easy to get lost in this place. Everything looks the same. Even this spot looks the same as another passed not less than ten minutes ago, ... or was that further east.

More Pikemen

More skeletons of dead orcish pikemen and their disintegrating weapons lie here. A few skeletons riddled with broken arrows, still clutching the clubs they were wielding, also lie here.

Lost In The Bones

All this walking is tiring, perhaps one could find somewhere to rest near that rise in the ground to the south-west. Or perhaps even that small hollow in the ground to the south. Better that than wandering around in this hell-hole forever.

Last Stand

A single lone human skeleton sits here surrounded by scores of goblin, hobgoblin and orcish skeletons. Judging by the markings on his now rusting armor, he was quite an accomplished swordsman. The number of goblins that he slaughtered, also supports this theory. Strangely though, his weapon seems to be missing, and it must have been taken off his corpse with some force, because all the knuckles are broken.

Mage Battle

From the looks of things here, at least two mages had a go at each other. Everything is pitted with acid stains, burned by fire, charred by lightning, or chilled by cold. Meteors swarmed, monsters were summoned and various bits and pieces disintegrated. Or at least that's what can be guessed of the fine powder. A right fine mess.

Lost In The Bones

Lost again. Not that it's hard in this place. Everything looks the same, smells the same, and sounds the same. The only thing that can even vaguely be used as a point of reference is the small rise in the bones to the west.

Lost In The Bones

Here, one could use a star chart or some other way of knowing which way is north. Anything to stop from wandering for hours over this old battlefield. A rise in the bones is visible to the west. It seems strange when all the rest of the bones are so flat. Well at least it is a landmark, and may even be able to provide some shelter if it rains.

Hollow In The Bones

Strange, someone has dug a shallow hole in the bones. Most of the long ones have been stacked up around the side, and the others tossed over the edge. The earth at the bottom looks all dry and barren.

Next To The Structure

Well the strange bone structure to the west looks a lot more exciting than the huge expanse of nothingness out to the east. Mind you there is a strange hollow immediately to the east, that doesn't look natural either. Underfoot seems very unstable here.

Slippery Bones

How did water get on these bones in this dry and desolate place? The bones here are covered in a pale colored slime that is very slippery to walk on. If one is not careful, they could slip and fall.

Skeletal Remains

Hundreds of skeletal remains lie here. It must have been an area of heavy fighting. Infantry you guess from the lack of animal skeletons. Weapons and armor here are rusted and corroded like everywhere else. Nothing at all to salvage.

Lost In The Bones

Someone could wander around in circles for ages here. Perhaps that small rise to the west may give a clue to a location and possibly a way out of this place.

Lost In The Bones

An arm sticks up out of the bones here and points towards a small rise to the north-west. It could be luck or fate, but this may be a clue to a way out of this area. On the other hand it could just be a coincidence.

Rounding The Corner

To the north-west is the corner of some strange bone structure. To the north and east the bones seem to continue on forever. To the south is some kind of edge to the bones. The bones shift around underfoot.

Lost In The Bones

How many bones can there be! One could walk for a year and not see all the bones here. The number of people that died here must have been huge. Perhaps that rise to the north-west will help get some bearings. At least maybe the view out over the bones from there would be a help.

Shifting Bones

No matter what is done, a stable footing cannot be gained on the bones here. It seems like they are deliberately trying to pull someone down. Every time they appear to give good footing, the surface shifts again.

Bones

Nothing except bones. Human, dwarven, goblinoid, orcish, and animal bones. Anything and everything died here. It is like a huge open graveyard. The feeling of death can be felt here.

South-Eastern Edge

Northward is a wide expanse of bones. That's all that can be seen save the few scraps of rotting and decaying armor and weapons. To the south, the bones thin out a little. It seems as if it would be safer to go that way.

North Side Of The Structure

A small hole in the top of this structure leads to a small spiral bone staircase leading down to the surface. To the south is a strange wall of bones. There aren't any holes in it, as if the bones have been stacked in order to have no gaps. The structure continues off to the east and west.

North-East Corner Of The Structure

From here one can get a great view across the expanse of bones. That is if looking out at the open graveyard of the thousands that died in the Great Battle could be referred to as "a great view". To the west is a small hole leading down and the rest of the structure continues south.

North-West Corner Of The Structure

An old shield lies here jammed in amongst the stacked bones of the structure. On the front of the shield, in behind the layers of dust and grime, is the golden image of a naked man running across an open field.

West Side Of The Structure

A strange bone wall stands to the east. It seems to have no gaps or seams. All the skulls and other bones in it seem to interlock perfectly. The top part of the structure continues both north and south.

South-West Corner Of The Structure

The bones here underfoot seem to have been flattened over time as though something heavy has been stacked on them. Some of them are crushed, some splintered, none seem to be completely intact. The floor seems to be quite solid though.

South Side Of The Structure

Looking south, a small monument off in the distance. Everywhere else though, all that can be seen is bones. Down below the structure some movement can be detected.

South-East Corner Of The Structure

It looks like there has been a lot of foot traffic through here. The bones are well worn, and in places some of them look polished and smooth. A breastplate is embedded in the floor here. It is dull and dented in some places and shiny and mirror-like in others.

East Side Of The Structure

Another of these strange bone walls lies to the west here. A full skeleton arm pokes out of the wall here and holds an old burnt out torch.

Battle Center

This room looks far more organized than any of the others near here. There are maps and old standards hanging on the walls, armor and weapons lie stacked up around the edges. A bone desk stands in the center of the room covered with more maps. Torches sit in bone sconces on each wall giving the room an eerie glow.

Intersection Under The Bones

Crouching is the only way to avoid the low roof at the intersection of some strange tunnels. Overhead several bones have been stacked together in a bizarre pattern. A scurrying noise coming from every tunnel. Perhaps it's not such a great idea to be down here.

Under The Bones

Something crawls off down one of the narrow passage-ways. All around is this dull colored soil with the odd occasional bone sticking out here and there. A scratching noise comes from further down the corridor.

Under The Bones

The air in here in this shaft is stale and old. It makes the skin feel all dry and leathery. The walls here have the effect of closing in on you, and you feel a little claustrophobic.

Under The Bones

The tunnel here looks more like a kind of animal burrow, like something has clawed its way through the earth. Strange though, there is no animal smell, droppings or stored food. If this is not an animal lair though, what are those scratching noises coming from the north.

Under The Bones

The burrow takes a turn to the south here. The soil at the bottom is covered in many tiny little feet marks. They look strange, kind of like a bird or a rodent. That could explain the noises from the north.

Under The Bones

The tunnel comes to an abrupt halt here. Overhead is nothing but bones, and they don't look too stable, as though they could fall through any minute. Or at least something walking on them.

Under The Bones

The roof is low here and standing up straight is not possible. It is not comfortable. Any prolonged period of time could be really bad for the back. Any prolonged period of time in these tunnels could be bad for your sanity. The tunnel seems to open up to the east here a little.

Under The Bones

A large skull, probably a horse or even an elephant, has fallen from above and it looks like some creature has decided to live inside it. The sound of scurrying comes from the west, perhaps the dweller of this skull is coming back home.

Under The Bones

A skeleton leg hangs from the ceiling here. When pushed to the side it swings back to the center like some kind of strange macabre pendulum. It can't be walked past without banging against it. Ick, what a horrible feeling.

Under The Bones

These tunnels are so small that even a small child would have trouble crawling and scrambling around. Surely there must be someway out of here.

Under The Bones

The tunnel ends here. There is nothing much here, just the same narrow passage like everywhere else, bones above and pale looking soil below.

Under The Bones

The tiny corridor turns west here. The roof is low and squatting is the only way to avoid hitting the bones above. To the east it looks like the corridor opens up. It may be possible to stand up down there. Now that would be a nice feeling.

Under The Bones

These tunnels seem to wind around forever. And they are so cramped and tiny. What could possibly move around down here. Perhaps those scratching noises coming from the west will provide an answer.

Under The Bones

The inside of this tiny, cramped, stale smelling tunnel creates the desire to be somewhere outside and in the sun. The corridor leads north and west, and some noises can be heard to the west.

Under The Bones

Water drips from the bones above. It seems strange to see water when everything else is so arid. There is some strange green goo around the edge of the pool that the water has formed and a small trickle runs down the tunnel to the north.

Under The Bones

Water has trickled in from the south and formed a small pool. There is weird green foam sitting around the edge of the water and it smells like someone has been sick in here. The stench burns the nostrils and upsets the stomach. Almost enough to bring up the lunch that was eaten earlier. Not very pretty at all.

Under The Bones

Stooping is the only way to get under the bulge of bones sticking down from above. Bones stick out downwards at strange angles, one has to be careful they don't walk into one of them. To the south the tunnel opens up a little.

Under The Bones

The tunnels are so tight and twisting. It would be so easy to get stuck and not be able to get back out. It would be horrible to get stuck in here. Especially with those sounds, the scratching and scurrying. What kind of foul creature is down here?

Under The Bones

Overhead is nothing but bones. A small amount of light filters down from above, but not enough to see by, just enough to give someone the willies. A cool breeze blows down the tunnel and the desire to be elsewhere rises.

Under The Bones

A lone skeleton sits at the end of this tunnel, completely stripped of anything that made him human. At a guess he fell down through the bones and then was eaten by some kind of creature. It even looks like someone has been gnawing at his bones.
