Trail Towards Yulash

This road heads north up a large hill, at the top of which lie the broken ruins of the once prosperous city of Yulash. Off into the distance on the top of the hill there seems to be a small force camped on each of the eastern and western sides of the hill. To the south the road leads back to the Bowshaft way.

Trail Towards Yulash

The road continues on, heading north up the hill and back down to the south. The road is fairly overgrown as if it does not see much use, and traveling is something of an effort. The top of the hill cannot be seen past the curve of the hill itself.

Beside an Overturned Cart

An overturned cart has been abandoned at the side of the road here for several months at least, and the undergrowth is slowly creeping over it. The hill is quite steep at this point making the climb hard work, but the top of the hill is not far off to the north. Back to the south the road leads down towards the Bowshaft Way.

Nearing the Top of the Hill

The hill is almost flat at this point with the summit not far away to the north. Up ahead there seems to be some kind of guard post although it is not possible to make out what it is guarding. There is a small group of soldiers camped on each side of the hill and you can see from here that on the western side are troops from Zhentil Keep, while Red Plumes from Hillsfar occupy the eastern side. Once this area between the two cities was fiercely contested, but since the Time of Troubles in the Realms there are just a mere handful of soldiers left in this area as troops have been withdrawn to more important areas.

Guard Post Above the Well

A small guard post for Red Plume troops has been hastily constructed at this point, standing above a well leading deep into the ground. This point is where the god Moander left its prison below the ground, but looking down the well there seems to be no activity there now. Sets of rusty iron bars lead down into the disused well. A path leads east to the Red Plume camp, and west into the Zhentilar camp, while an overgrown path leads north into dense undergrowth.

Path Through the Dense Undergrowth

This path has fallen into a very bad state from disuse. The undergrowth has all but eradicated any evidence of where the path used to lead. It is very difficult to make progress, but it appears as if it might be possible to progress northwards. To the south the path leads quickly to a disused well.

Dead End in the Dense Undergrowth

The undergrowth becomes so dense at this point as to make any further progress to the north impossible. The only way to go appears to be to force a path through the undergrowth back to the south.

Path Along the Hill

A fairly well traveled path leads east down a gentle slope into the Red Plume camp in the distance. From this distance the camp seems to consist of three or four fairly large buildings. Just to the west of here the path leads to a disused well atop the hill's summit.

Path Along the Hill

The path eastward gently slopes down the hill, with a Red Plume guard post being directly east of here. To the west, the path leads up the hill towards a disused well. The path is very wide, and has seemingly been built to carry a lot of people, but now is beginning to fall into disrepair.

Outside the Red Plume Guard Post

A small guard post has been placed next to the trail here so that the Red Plumes can keep a watch out in case the Zhentilar try anything. Nobody seems interested in checking the few other travelers who happen this way, and it seems that this guard post is more of a formality than a serious attempt at defense.

Path Through the Camp

The path continues in an east-west direction through the camp at this point. There are few people around, and there seems to be very little activity. Just to the north there seems to be some kind of hospital building although it is fairly run down. To the west is the guard post, and further to the west are some more buildings.

Hospital Waiting Room

This appears to be the waiting room for the hospital. It is very run down and there do not seem to be any chairs for people to sit on, just a hard wooden floor. To the east is a small office while further to the north is some kind of surgery area from which a low moaning can be heard. An empty doorframe to the south leads to a path through the camp.

Hospital Surgery

The scene in here is pretty gruesome with two very dead people lying on wooden slabs at the back of the room, while in the middle of the room there are a couple of operating tables surrounded by some rather crude and nasty looking implements. The only exit seems to be back to the run down waiting room to the south.

Hospital Office

This small office is in worse shape than the rest of the hospital. The entire room is missing and offers no shelter from the elements. A broken desk sits in the far corner of the room, and it is rotted through. This office does not give the impression that it is much used.

Path Through the Camp

The path continues in an east-west direction through the camp at this point. There are few people around, and there seems to be very little activity. Just to the south there seems to be a ruined house, while further east are some more buildings. To the west, the path leads up a hill towards a guard post.

A Ruined House

This house looks as if it may have once housed an important Red Plume commander in the days when Yulash was a fiercely contested area, but since then the commander must have left for more important areas and this house has fallen into a terrible state. The undergrowth has grown up to reclaim this house at an amazing rate. The only exit is to the north, back onto the path.

Path Through the Camp

The path continues in an east-west direction through the camp at this point and there seem to be few people around, with very little activity. The path leads up a hill to the west, and a guard post can be seen in the distance. To the east the end of the path can be seen below, and the buildings in that direction appear to be in a better state of repair than the ones seen so far.

Path Through the Camp

The path continues in an east-west direction through the camp at this point and there seem to actually be a few people around in this area. To the north is some kind of large building, while further to the east the trail ends beside some more large buildings. To the west the path leads up the hill toward a guard post.

End of the Path Through the Camp

The trail through the camp ends at this point with further progress east blocked by impassable undergrowth. The smell of food is wafting in from the north, although it does not smell too appealing. To the south a large building appears to be the command center for the camp. To the west, the path leads gently up the hill towards a guard post.

Red Plume Barracks

This is a large room with approximately 40 beds in it, although very few appear as if they are being used at this time. The building itself has been fairly well maintained, although there are a few cracks in the walls caused by plants which have tried to grow through the walls somehow. To the north is what appears to be another similar room, while another exit leads out of the building to the south.

Red Plume Barracks

This is a large room with approximately 40 beds in it, although very few appear as if they are being used at this time. The building itself has been fairly well maintained, although there are a few large cracks in the walls caused by plants which have tried to grow through the walls somehow. To the south is another similar room, and it also appears to be the only exit from here.

Entrance Chamber of Red Plume Command

This building is comparatively large and very well maintained. This room has white painted walls and is laid out in a very functional manner with a bench along one wall for people to wait to see the commander, and a desk in the middle for someone to check those who enter. However it looks as if there is very little activity going on at the moment. An open door to the north leads to another chamber, while through an empty doorframe to the west some mumblings can be heard. The northern exit from the room leads to the road which runs through the encampment.

The Red Plume Commander's Chambers

This room has a very spartan look with a basic desk positioned under the west window with a bed positioned under the south window. Looking out of the windows the forest has grown right up against the wall, almost completely blocking out the light. It appears as if it has been cut back in the past, but has quickly grown back up.

The Red Plume High Cleric's Chambers

A faint smell of incense lingers in the air mingling with the scent of some unidentified spice. There is a tiny stick of incense lit in the far corner of the room which must be causing this smell. The room itself is quite dingy, this being due to the room's lack of windows. The room's only furnishing is a very hard, uncomfortable looking bed set against the north wall.

Red Plume Mess Hall

This hall looks large enough to seat 200 soldiers in one sitting with ease, were there enough tables in the room. As it is at the moment there are a few tables at the north end of the room, while the rest of the room is mere open space. It looks as if it has perhaps been converted into some kind of exercise and training hall judging by the stuffed dummies hanging from the ceiling. The stench of something cooking wafts in from the north while fresh air beckons to the south.

Red Plume Kitchen

Upon entering this room it is something of a mixed blessing to find out that the stench is not in fact coming from the cooking, but is in fact coming from a room off to the east. The food itself does not actually seem to smell too bad. Comparatively fresh air beckons from the large mess hall to the south.

Garbage Pit!

The stench in this room defies description with rotting foodstuffs lying around in large piles. They look as if they have been untouched for some time and some of them look almost alive. The only exit is back to the west, and it would be preferable to hurry.

Path Along the Hill

A reasonably well traveled path leads west down a gentle slope into the Zhentarim camp in the distance. From this distance the camp seems to have once been quite large, but that now only a couple of buildings remain standing. Just to the east the path leads back to the well.

Path Along the Hill

The western path gently slopes down the hill at this point, with a Zhentarim guard post just west of here. To the east of here the path leads up the hill towards a disused well. The path is very wide, and has seemingly been built to carry a lot of people, but has now fallen into a very bad state of disuse, with undergrowth slowly encroaching upon it.

Outside the Zhentarim Guard Post

A small guard post has been placed next to the trail here so that the Zhentarim can keep a watch out in case the Red Plumes try anything. Nobody seems interested in checking the few other travellers who happen this way, and it seems that this guard post is more of a formality than a serious attempt at defense.

Outside the Zhentarim Lookout Tower

A tall lookout tower has been placed just to the north of the trail here, and it looks high enough to be able to see right across the hilltop into the Red Plume Camp. Other than that the trail leads east towards a guard post, or west towards the main camp.

Inside the Zhentarim Watchtower

The view from inside this watchtower is incredible. Far to the south can be seen the town of Daleville with little matchstick people walking among tiny dolls houses. Further away to the south is the vast green sea of Cormanthor, while off to the east there is a similar sight with the elven court. Up to the north the Dragonspine mountains poke up through the landscape with frost covered peaks. The actual purpose for which this tower was built was surely to have kept a close eye on the Red Plume activity on the other side of Yulash hill, but it takes second place to the spectacular scenery. The only way to go from here is to abandon the view and head south to the mundane sights of the rest of Yulash.

Path Along the Hill

The path continues to gently slope down the hill at this point, with a Zhentarim guard post and watchtower off to the east while to the west the road bends south and heads towards the remains of the Zhentilar camp. To the north and south here are the broken down ruins of old buildings which have been rapidly consumed by the pervasive undergrowth in this area. It is a mystery as to what causes it to grow so rapidly and aggressively.

Bend in the Path

The path bends sharply to the south at this point and narrows sharply as it picks its way through some particularly dense undergrowth. The path itself is only just maintained by a few people passing this way, and at times it seems worthwhile to hack back some of the overhanging plants to make the going easier.

Centre of the Zhentarim Camp

This is nothing more than a large clearing in what remains of the Zhentarim camp. Off to the south there is a large building from which the sounds of activity are coming, while off to the east a small building appears to house what is left of the command structure for this camp. The path itself heads northwards where it bends off to the east, and also heads west into some thick undergrowth.

The Zhentarim Command Building

This tiny building consists of nothing more than a single room with a desk in it. The only things of slight interest are some maps stuck to the wall, while the only way out is back to the west. A barred window looks out into some dense undergrowth.

Zhentarim Barracks

This building has been well maintained against the onslaught of the plants but this barracks looks as if it has been converted from being only a barracks into having a mess hall and kitchen included in a hastily constructed room to the east. Back to the north an exit leads to a large clearing.

Zhentarim Mess Hall

This room has been converted from serving as a barracks into a combined kitchen and mess hall. Several long tables run down the center of the room with benches beside them, while in the northeastern corner there is a small kitchen. The food which is cooking smells surprisingly good. The only exit seems to lead to the main barracks to the west.

Path Through the Dense Undergrowth

This path marks out a narrow route into the dense undergrowth that has grown up all over this hill. For some reason the undergrowth is avoiding this small path, making it relatively easy to make progress to the west. To the east, the path opens out into a large clearing.

Path Through the Dense Undergrowth

This path marks out a narrow route into the dense undergrowth that has grown up all over this hill. For some reason the undergrowth is avoiding this small path, making it relatively easy to make progress to both the east and west.

Intersection in the Dense Undergrowth

The path arrives at an intersection at this point with narrow paths leading to the north, east, and south through the thick undergrowth. There is very little to choose from between the three directions as they all look equally narrow and gloomy.

Dead End

The path here comes to an abrupt halt at this point with the undergrowth having grown up to swallow the path completely. It has done such a good job that it is now impossible to tell whether the path ever continued beyond this point. The undergrowth is so dense that it would take weeks to make any attempt to force a route through, and so the only exit is back to the north.

Bend in the Path Through the Dense Undergrowth

The path bends sharply at this point leading south and west. To the south the path looks as narrow as usual, but off to the west the path appears to widen somewhat as the undergrowth relents.

Wider Path Through the Dense Undergrowth

The undergrowth surrounding the path at this point looks almost ready to spring to life and attack. A sense of anticipation fills the air as if the plants themselves are waiting for something to happen. At points there are large lumps of very dense plant matter which are forming into ten foot high mounds with vaguely humanoid shapes. The path leads onwards to the west, and narrows as it heads east.

In the Well

The well grows dimmer at this point, but is lit by some kind of glowing moss which grows deep into the earthen walls. A set of rusty iron bars has been driven deep into the walls and provides passage up and down.

Bottom of the Well

At the bottom of the well a wide passageway leads northwards into the distance. The whole area is lit by the glow from some kind of moss which is growing on all surfaces. A set of rusty iron bars leads upwards into the well itself. This well has clearly not been used for a long time as the ground is not even damp.

Passage Under the Hill

At this point along the passageway, plant life has grown out of the walls, floor, and ceiling and is covering all the surfaces with a thick green layer. All of the plants have grown to the north and can be seen stretching off down the passageway, while to the south the tunnel is clear from the pervasive growth.

Passage Under the Hill

Plants are growing thick over every surface here, obscuring the crude walls of dirt underneath. The passageway bends at this point heading to the south and off to the west.

Passage Under the Hill

The plant life grows strong and dense at this point, and above the somewhat overpowering fragrances of the lush greenery is a strange smell of decay. Along one wall is a strange lump of plants from which the smell originates. The passage itself bends here, leading north and east.

Passage Under the Hill

The plant life grows strong and dense at this point, as it is everywhere along this underground passage. Along with the scent of the lush greenery is the lingering smell of rotting flesh which emanates from a large lump of plantlife in the middle of the passage. The passage itself bends here, leading east and south.

Passage Under the Hill

Strange green vines grow along the passageway at this point, standing out from the ordinary types of plant life. They sprout from the earth and appear to be standing upright in the middle of the room with no means of support. The passageway itself continues in an east-west direction, looking identical in each direction.

Passage Under the Hill

The passage is very damp at this point, and the plants have taken advantage of this to grow particularly thick. It requires some effort to push them aside to progress onward. From what little can be seen, the passage appears to bend very slightly at this point, and it looks possible to force a way to the west and south.

Passage Under the Hill

Plants are growing thick over every surface at this point in the passage, blocking the underlying surfaces from view. The ground is slightly slippery because of some strange looking moss underfoot, but it does not seem to pose a danger. The passageway bends sharply at this point with exits leading north and east. To the north the plant growth looks particularly thick and verdant.

Passage Under the Hill

There are a couple of skeletons lying on the ground at this point and judging from what is left of the armor on them they were once Zhentarim troops. There are vines growing all over the skeletons, making them almost look as if they have green muscles on them. The passage itself forms a slight bend, leading either west or north.

Passage Under the Hill

Plantlife is growing across every surface, forming a particularly deep and lush carpet underfoot. The plants themselves are fairly uninteresting being green and vine-like, but from somewhere underneath them comes a strange green glow which lights this passageway as it does all of the others. The passageway itself continues in a straight north-south direction.

Passage Under the Hill

Only a few vines pass along this passageway, and the surfaces of the walls, floor and ceiling have been crudely carved from solid rock. The vines all seem to cling to the eastern wall, and there is a clump which seems to be growing inside the head of a recently dead Zhentarim mage. The only ways to go are to continue along the passageway, either to the north or the south.

Passage Under the Hill

This passageway has been crudely carved out of solid rock, and is very plain apart from a few vines which snake their way from the west along the bend in the passage here and head off to the south. To the south the area looks similar, but off to the west it seems as if the vines have grown more.

Passage Under the Hill

Thick vines, large leaves, and all sorts of plantlife cover all the surfaces of this corridor in a thick damp layer. There is a distinct smell of rotting plants, detectable above the normal jungle-like odors which are around in all of these underground passages. The passage arrives at a junction here and leads off to the north, east, and west. The view appears very much the same to the north and west, but the plantlife seems to thin out to the east.

Dead End Under the Hill

The passageway comes to an end at this point up against a solid wall of dense vines. The vines are so immobile that there must be solid rock behind them, although it is a mystery as to what is therefore keeping the plants alive. The only way to go seems to be back to the south.

Passage Under the Hill

Thick vines, large leaves, and all sorts of plantlife cover all the surfaces of this corridor in a thick damp layer. There is a distinctly unpleasant smell, detectable above the normal jungle-like odors which are around in all of these underground passages. The smell seems to be caused by a thick layer of rotting plants spread across the floor. The passage continues in an east-west direction, and looks much the same in each direction.

Passage Under the Hill

Flowers have somehow bloomed on the vines in this part of the passage and they give the impression that they are watching for anything passing this way. Other than the flowers, the passage is much the same as the rest down here and leads in an east-west direction.

Passage Under the Hill

Chopped up plants lie in large rotting piles on the ground here, giving off a rather unpleasant stench. It seems that they may once have completely filled this passageway judging by what remains of them, but have been savagely destroyed by something wanting to get past. It is now possible to progress to the north or east.

Wider Path Through the Dense Undergrowth

The undergrowth surrounding the path at this point looks almost ready to spring to life and attack. A sense of anticipation fills the air as if the plants themselves are waiting for something to happen. Just to the north of the trail a large dead tree is standing, completely covered in vines which have choked it to death. The path leads onwards to the east and to the west.

Dead End

The undergrowth here has grown back as thickly as elsewhere making it impossible to progress further through the forest. Just at the end of the path a small tendril pokes its way up through a tiny hole leading down into the earth. While the tendril may have been able to come up this way, it would be impossible for a person to go down that way, and so the only exit is back to the east.

Passage Under the Hill

Chopped up plants lie in large rotting piles on the ground here, giving off a rather unpleasant stench. It seems that they may once have completely filled this passageway judging by what remains of them, but have been savagely destroyed by something wanting to get past. It is now possible to continue to the north or south.

Passage Under the Hill

The short trail of devastated plants stops here at the corpse of a huge snake which has forced its way through from the south. The corpse is covered in strong vines which appear to have squeezed the life out of the snake as it tried to push past. To the south can be seen the route the snake took, and to the east it looks as if it is possible to push gently past the plants and progress in that direction.

Passage Under the Hill

The plantlife becomes much thinner at this point with nothing more than perhaps twenty vines passing through this stone passage. The passage itself bends sharply here, leading off to the west where there is a large mass of plants, and off to the south where it is relatively clear.

Passage Under the Hill

This passage has been roughly carved from solid rock and the floor is rough and uneven. Snaking their way along the floor are half a dozen strong vines which follow the bend in the passage and lead off to the north and east.

Passage Under the Hill

It becomes clear at this point that the plantlife which has invaded this passage must have come from somewhere outside and grown inward, since the last few vines come to a stop here. Further to the north the passage is clear of plantlife, while off to the west the passage continues.

Passage Under the Hill

This is a rough stone passage heading north and south. The floor is very uneven and it would be easy to trip and stumble on it. This passage appears to have been carved with haste for some unknown reason.

Passage Under the Hill

The passage turns sharply at this point, and can be seen heading off to the south and west from here. The passage itself has been carved from solid rock, but little time was taken to smooth the rocks' rough surfaces.

Passage Under the Hill

This passage has been carved from solid rock and heads in an east-west direction. A faint light illuminates the area, as it does all of the many passages down here. The light seems to come from some kind of moss which has merged with the very stone of the walls.

Passage Under the Hill

This passage has been carved from solid rock and heads in an east-west direction. To the east the passageway stretches off into the distance, but further to the west it looks as if it approaches a bend. The passageway itself has been crudely carved from solid rock and all of the surfaces are very rough.

Passage Under the Hill

The stone passage bends sharply at this point and while off to the east it stretches off into the distance, to the north it heads into a twisting section. The passageway itself has been roughly carved from solid rock and the surfaces are very uneven.

Passage Under the Hill

The passage twists all over the place as it progresses along here, making it seem as if some kind of drunken builder was at work on this section. Strangely, the surfaces of the rocks are much more neatly done. Among the twists and turns it eventually ends up with exits to the south and east.

Passage Under the Hill

This passage has been neatly carved from solid rock, but the walls have then had bricks added on top of them. The bricks are coated with some kind of a blue glaze and mortared together with red tinged mortar. They give off an eerie blue glow. The passage itself heads off to the east and west.

Passage Under the Hill

This passage has been neatly carved from solid rock, but the walls have then had bricks added on top of them. The bricks are coated with some kind of a blue glaze and mortared together with red tinged mortar. They give off an eerie blue glow. The passage itself bends through a sharp turn here leading north and west.

Passage Under the Hill

This passage has been neatly carved from solid rock, but the walls have then had bricks added on top of them. The bricks are coated with some kind of a blue glaze and mortared together with red tinged mortar. The walls have been carved with hundreds of copies of a strange symbol depicting a mouth in a hand. The passage itself bends at this point, and leads south and west.

Shrine Under the Hill

The passage opens up into a large chamber in which has been built some kind of shrine. The altar consists of a large hand, perhaps six feet high with a large fanged mouth carved out of its palm. Several candles have been set up around the altar and are giving off a smell rather like the plants from further back along the passage. This chamber has been carved from solid rock, but the walls have then had bricks added on top of them. The bricks are coated with some kind of a blue glaze and mortared together with red tinged mortar. They have symbols carved into them, mostly seeming to look much like the altar. The passage leads off to the east, while to the west a large door has been placed and is covered with magical symbols. In the middle of the door is a large circular indentation.

Small Chamber Under the Hill

This is a small chamber with large doors leading to the east and west. Each door has a circular indentation in the middle of it. The walls of the chamber consist of bricks covered by a blue glaze and mortared together with red tinged mortar. The walls glow brightly with an eerie blue light.

Moanders Prison Chamber

This chamber is huge, being large enough to fit a small army inside, or at least a division. The walls, ceiling, and floor are made from bricks which have been coated with a blue glaze and are mortared together with red tinged mortar. To the east a large door stands with a circular indentation in the center of it. The walls glow with a bright blue light which is particularly strong on the western wall. A slight draft can be felt but there is no indication of where it comes from.

Secret Chamber Under the Hill

This chamber is very cramped, and there seems to be little of interest here besides what is lying on the floor. The walls themselves are covered with the same bricks and strange blue glaze as the main chamber.

A Tiny Hole

This is a tiny hole leading through the earth, but it would not be possible for anything other than the tendril of some plant to use it as a passage.

A Hidden Passage

This is a wide stone passage leading northwards from here. A thick layer of dust coats the floor as if it has not been used for some time. Up above, some plants have broken through the roof and something seems to have killed them. The plants have begun to rot and give off a very unpleasant odor. This area is very cold, much more so than the area above, and there is a strange feeling in the air.

A Stone Passage

The passage continues to the north and south here, looking much the same in either direction. The air has become very cold down here, and there is an almost palpable feeling of death in the air.

A Stone Passage

A very cold feeling is strong here, but the air is so dry that there is not even a hint of frost on the walls or ground. The passage leads south where it seems to be somewhat warmer, or it heads north where it opens into some kind of chamber.

A Cold Tomb

The presence of death can be felt in the very air in this room. It seems to have plain stone walls and no furnishings, but every so often you catch a flicker in the corner of your eye which indicates that this is a nice, cozy, well furnished room. In the center of the room there is a large circle inscribed in the floor.

A Cozy Room

This room appears to be some kind of library judging by the bookcases on the walls. The books themselves all appear to be concerned with basic magical theory, and so are of little practical use. On the north wall is situated a large fireplace, in which a large fire burns merrily, although it does not seem to be consuming its fuel. A large wooden chest rests against the eastern wall, while a large circle is carved into the wooden floor in the center of the room.
