A drain under the North Ride

Far above, a grating lets in a thin grey light and the rumble of cartwheels on the North Ride. Rainwater, and worse, runs down the walls into mud that comes up to your knees. The pipe runs south.

A muddy junction

Three pipes meet in knee-deep mud. Someone has scratched a crude rat on the wall with an arrow pointing east, and under it, in a careful hand: H. & J., RATCATCHERS. The pipes lead north, east and south.

The mud hole

The mud here comes up to your thighs and pulls at every step. In the middle of the floor an enormous drainpipe gapes, and the mud slides into it in slow, sucking lumps. Something down there makes a wet, gulping sound. The way back is north; the drainpipe leads down.

The Dark Pit

You are standing by the edge of a dark pit that leads down into even deeper darkness. >BWWAAADDRR< - The smell from down there is unbearable. The sewer stretches into the darkness to the east.

The muddy sewer

The pipe bends here. Something has been dragged through the mud, leaving a broad furrow and a few long grey hairs caught on the bricks: a rat, and a big one. The pipe leads east and south.

The muddy sewer

You are standing in something that reminds you very much of porridge, this has the advantage that it's not hot, it's rather cold actually. The pipe bends to the north and east.

The muddy sewer bend

This isn't your idea of a place to stay too long. You're in up to your knees in something that resembles mud, but you're not quite sure. The bend in which you stand leads west and south.

A muddy passage

You have both your feet safely stuck in mud. It isn't the mud that's wrong it's the smell, the sounds, the total darkness that surrounds you. Everything here is so depressing. The pipe leads on with a trail of thick mud to the north and south.

The Sewer Junction

You stand in the middle of a huge junction of sewer pipes right under what you'd think was an air shaft. The sewer pipes lead to the north, south, east and west. It looks quite impossible to force your way up.

The OLD bend in the sewer pipe

This was a bend in the sewer pipe. A strong smell seeps in from the north. The sewer goes north and east. But to the west is a hole in the wall which looks more animal-made than man-made.

A narrow tube

A narrow tube runs east and west, the mud up to your knees. Tiny bones are trodden into the muck all along it, the leavings of the sewer rats.

The bend in the Muddy sewer

This is not your idea of a holiday. You stand in mud up to your knees. It's absolutely inconceivable how all this mud could have been placed here. The pipe leads to the west and south.

A MUDDY intersection

You wouldn't want to know the true feeling of standing in this mud up to your hips. >BWAADR<. All that fills your mind right now is the dream of a hot bath. This is NOT very clean mud you know, remember you're in the sewer! The pipes lead north, south and east.

A muddy dead end

The pipe ends in a wall of packed mud that comes up to your thighs, and the smell is enough to drive any thinking creature away. Something small glints in the mud at the foot of the wall, where the drain from the houses above empties. The only way on is back north.

The old well

You are standing by an old and worn well from before this century. The sewer leads to the east from here and the well leads down into darkness. Metal bars implanted in the side of the well lead down as a ladder.

A bend in the pipe

The pipe turns here, its bricks furred with grey moss. Someone once nailed a lantern hook into the wall, but the lantern is long gone. The pipe leads south and east.

The sewer junction

Pipes from the north, west and south meet in a chamber shaped like a bell. Water drips from the dome into a shallow pool on the floor that never quite drains away.

A quiet corner

This corner is strangely quiet; even the dripping stops. Rat droppings have been swept into a neat heap against the wall, as if somebody keeps it tidy. The pipes lead west and north.

The Unicus Club House

Well you have found the club house of Unicus and his partners. UNICUS The Great Sewer God (Well that's what they GAVE me!) Ganthony the Newbie Helper Extraordinaire (Customer Service for Life) Ardony WolfSon the player test character and sometimes Lillith Matron Mother of Malice and Myrnna sweet cleric.

WOW! This room is a mess! Parts of incomplete MOBs, half-working items, lists and documentation everywhere. A HUGE throne in front of a magic mirror. .

The Edge of the Water

The pool side is dimly lit up by your light. You can see absolutely nothing else nearby. The darkness here seems enormously oppressive here. The air is damp and the rock on which you stand is slippery. The pool seems too dark to make anything clear. The pool seems to extend to the east. The rock can be climbed upwards from here, and below you it slopes down to another stretch of the pool's edge.

A quiet stretch of pipe

This is the kind of place to rest, though the smell could be a LOT better than this. The sewer goes east and west from here.

The odd room with smooth walls

As you enter you hear a loud click from one of the walls ... and you fall and fall and fall ... . . . . ... And come to an abrupt end. THIS is strange indeed. There's an arched entryway leading down.

Lost Room

This room is clean and dry. It might have been sealed recently or for many ages of man. What wonderful secrets might have been sealed here?

A crossing of pipes

Pipes cross here and the mud thins to ankle depth. Chalk marks on the wall count something in fives, hundreds of them: rats, perhaps. The pipes lead east, south and west.

A dripping intersection

Water drips from a dozen cracks in the roof and pocks the mud like rain. The pipes lead north, south and east.

A junction

This one seems interesting, a big difference from all the other junctions. It seems cleaner than the rest of them. Weird. Something that looks like an air shaft leads upwards, but it looks far too slippery to climb. The pipes lead to the south, west and north.

The sewer junction

Three pipes meet here. A knotted rope hangs from a crack in the roof, far too frayed to trust. The pipes lead north, east and west.

The Triple Junction

You stand in the middle of a huge junction of concrete sewer pipes. The pipes lead into three different directions : east, south and west.

The Quadruple Junction Under the Catacombs

There is a large pile of garbage here. Obviously the opening above has been used to dispose of someone's trash. There are enormous concrete pipes leading north, south, east and west. On the wall is attached a metal ladder so that someone could climb up through all of this garbage (if they really wanted to).

The end of the pipe

The pipe ends here, at a heavy door set into the south wall. The only open way leads north.

A bend in the sewer pipe

The pipe turns a corner. Long scratches run along both walls at the height of a big dog, and the mud is churned with tracks. The pipe leads south and west.

The sewer pipe bend

The pipe turns a corner beneath a cracked dome of brick. Roots from the town above have pushed through and hang down like hair. The pipe leads west and north.

Broken Concrete Pipes

The pipe ends in a heap of broken concrete. Beyond it the floor has given way into a pit, with iron bars set in its side for a ladder. Tracks lead down it, each print the size of a coin and in sixes: ants, and big ones. The pipe leads back west.

The round room

As you enter the room it starts rotating - at first slowly, later faster and faster - You get totally confused as to where up and down is, but you are certain that the doorway is in the opposite direction of what it was when you entered. It now leads east. There was only this one exit.

The three way junction

Pipes lead west from this junction. To the east and the south are heavy doors; on the eastern one, in red paint: RATCATCHERS. KNOCK.

The Ratcatchers' Store

Shelves crowd this small room, lit by a single torch: rat traps of every size, sacks of poisoned bait marked with a skull, coils of rope, spare lanterns and a barrel of something that smells of vinegar. The only way out is north.

The Shaft

You are standing by the edge of a deep, dark shaft leading down. A single ladder is your tool to work your way down if you so wish. The sewer pipe leads south from here.

The Sewer Entrance

You stand in the middle of a pipe that leads from north to south. Above you an air shaft leads up into sunlight. It seems totally impossible to go up that way.

A bend in the pipes

This is a passageway in the pipes of the sewer system leading north and east.

The Ratcatchers' Lodge

Chairs are cut into the walls of this big room, and five torches light it. Rat tails hang from nails above the hearth in rows, each row labelled with a year. A table holds a half-eaten loaf and a ledger of rats caught. To the south an arch leads into a larger room; to the west a door opens on the sewers.

The Glittering Room

The walls of this room glitter like gold, though they are only crusted with some mineral, and the glitter itself seems to light the room. Two huge beds have been dragged in here, one neatly made and one a heap of blankets. To the south the floor is covered with foul water; the lodge is back north.

The Pool in the sewer

You stand in water to your waist. To the north is the entrance to this room. A single door leads east.

The Sewers

You stand in a dead end of the sewer. The only way out is south. You can see a shaft leading up but it looks too difficult to go up that way.

The junction

This is a junction leading north, east and west. There is also a room to the south with a large door. At one time the south route had much traffic but not for an obviously long time.

The small room

The only thing in this room of interest is a chair, and that's tight to the rock floor. A doorway leads east into darkness.

The Sewer pipe

You are in what reminds you of a foul sewer, as if you liked being here! The only way out leads south.

The Grand Sewer

You are in a Grand Sewer Pipe. This stretches toward the south. It's large indeed! A doorway leads to the east from here.

The South end of the Grand Pipe

You stand in water to your knees. A doorway leads west from here. The Pipe stretches north.

the Dusty Forgotten Hallway

Very strange. This room seems to have a lot of dust and grime. It is as if even the sewer animals won't come here.

The Edge of The Water Sewer

You stand in a room where half of the floor is covered in water. The water leads east and a doorway leads west.

The Dark hallway

You can't see much of this, even with a light. The hallway goes into a passageway to the south. A doorway leads west.

A dark passageway

Your light seems to sink into the black walls here and reaches only the ground at your feet. The passageway continues south and north.

A sloping passageway

The floor slopes gently down to the south, and a thin trickle of water runs past your boots toward the sound of a much bigger flow. The passageway continues south and north.

A narrow passageway

The walls close in until you must turn sideways. Old claw marks score the stone at shoulder height. The passageway continues south and north.

The dark passageway

The passageway seems to run to the west and north. To the east there is water covering the floor, and that leads through an arched entry to a much more water-filled sewer.

The Watery Sewer Bend

You can't see anything but the water you're in up to your hips. The sewer seems to bend and lead south and west.

The Watery sewer

Cold black water comes up to your hips. Something brushes your leg and is gone. The sewer leads south and north.

The Watery sewer

Rubbish turns slowly in the current: a broken basket, an old boot, a dead fish belly-up. The sewer leads south and north.

The Watery Sewer Junction

You can't see anything but the water you're in up to your hips. The sewer seems to lead into a junction going south, north and east.

The Watery sewer

The current pulls harder here, south toward the roar of falling water. Your light glints on the ripples. The sewer leads south and north.

The Watery sewer junction

The water in this junction of pipes would be hip deep. Exit choices are north, south and east.

The Watery sewer

In this room the water seems to be waist deep. Large concrete sewer pipes lead south and north.

The Watery sewer bend

The water here is hip high. The sewer seems to bend here with the passageway running west and north.

A ledge by the dark pool

You can't see much here but the echo tells you that there's quite a drop down. You can just make out a huge dark pool out there in the darkness, mostly because of the trickling of water. The water from the sewer actually washes over this ledge and makes it quite slippery. From here it drops, like a waterfall, into the pool far down.

Under you there is a small fissure in the rock. It seems big enough to contain a few people.

Hole in the wall

A hole has been chewed through the wall of the pipe, its edges smooth as polished stone. It is very cramped here, and the tunnel beyond to the west is tighter still. The sewer is back east.

First chamber

The walls here are very close and appear as though chewed or dug by some animal from the nearly solid stone.

Ant Tunnels

The tightly-dug ant tunnel continues in a surprisingly straight line to the west. One thing for sure...this is the cleanest part of the sewers that you've seen yet!

Clean Tunnel

This is a spotless tunnel for being in the sewers. The ants are good housekeepers. It's almost a joy to walk here.

Spotless Tunnel

More spotless tunnel is in a straight line west. It does seem to be gradually becoming larger.

Large clean tunnel

Here the tunnel gets back to being room sized. It is getting hard to see the small opening all the way to the east. To the west it looks as if it will open up into a large chamber.

Ant Nest Entrance

This seems to be the last tunnel-room. From here it widens into a huge chamber to the west. You seem to have discovered the main nest.

The Nest Crossing

Four tunnels meet in a round chamber chewed smooth from the rock. The floor is swept clean and the air smells sharp and sour, like vinegar. Tunnels lead north, south, east and west.

The Larder

Food from the town above is stacked here in neat piles: crusts of bread, a ham bone, apple cores, half a pie still in its dish. The ants have carried all of it down the drains a crumb at a time. Tunnels lead south and west.

The Fungus Garden

Pale mushrooms grow in rows on beds of chewed leaves and dung, tended as carefully as any garden in Daleville. The air is warm and damp and smells of earth. Tunnels lead north and west.

The Egg Chamber

Hundreds of white eggs, each the size of a fist, are heaped against the walls, and worker ants turn them one by one to keep them warm. Tunnels lead north, east and west.

The Queen's Chamber

This is the great central chamber of the nest. A hollow in the floor has been worn smooth by the queen who lies in it, and the walls around it are crusted with a pale, waxy shell. Every tunnel of the nest leads here: north, south, east and west.

The Soldiers' Hall

Warrior ants rest here between patrols, packed in rows, their jaws clicking as they wake. Scraps of armor and broken blades lie among them: the ants have met adventurers before. Tunnels lead east, south and west.

The Midden

Everything the nest throws out ends up here: husks, eggshells, the bones of rats picked clean, and whatever fell down the drains from the town above. Something metal glints among the rubbish. Tunnels lead east and south.

The Nursery

Fat white larvae lie in rows along the floor, and nurse ants move between them with food in their jaws. Tunnels lead north, east and south.

The Sealed Tunnel

A broad tunnel once led down and away from here into the rock, toward the crystal hive the ants came from. It has been sealed with chewed stone and wax. Tunnels lead north and east.

The fissure under the ledge

This is a small fissure in the solid rock. Under you lies the deep dark pool. The water trickles quietly down from the ledge above you. The water smells like the water in a sewer.

Under the mud hole

You stand in a small room with a great big opening in the ceiling. From this opening there's mud dripping down in large lumps. >YUCK<. You can smell the foul stench of the slimy sediment as you try not to get covered by the falling sludge. To the east there is an entryway leading out from here and it seems absolutely impossible to force the muddy descent.

Under the Dark Pit

Nice place you found yourself. You stand in the middle of a room with only two exits, Up and East. A tall ladder is left here so that you can climb up through the Pit without the use of a rope.

A muddy bend in the sewer system

You are standing in what looks like a bend in the pipe system of the sewer. The 'floor' is covered completely by mud! This includes covering your legs up to your knees as well. The pipe leads west and south.

A bend in the sewer pipes

You stand in the middle of what looks like a bend of pipes going west and north.

Down the old well

You are dangling on the slippery sides of the old well leading down and up. The only secure point here is the metal bars that are cemented into the sides, the ones that you cling frantically to so that you don't fall. Who knows how deep this ancient well is? At least it seems quiet and long undisturbed. Probably an excellent place for a weary adventurer to recover before going on. There is a nice ledge to rest on but the rungs leading further down seem to have rusted beyond safety.

The northwestern corner of the ledge

You stand, swaying out from the ledge, with only a couple of inches of safe, solid ledge under your feet. The ledge continues to the east but not back south. It seems that the ledge is too narrow to turn on so you'll have to continue forward.

The narrow ledge

You are in the progress of walking all the way around the ledge since there's no way of turning around on this all too narrow path. There IS another exit from here but that leads right into mid-air and with high probability of a free fall session afterwards.

The southwestern corner of the ledge

This seems like a ledge that is a little broader than the one just to the north of here. The ledge seems to lead around some sort of Abyss of total darkness. The ledge seems to have an odd-looking edge here.

An odd bend

You stand in a rather odd bend of pipes. The pipes actually don't resemble pipes anymore. They look more like a real stone tunnel, or a passageway hewn directly into the rock. The ways from here lead north and east.

The narrow ledge going east to west

You are in the progress of walking all the way around the ledge since there's no way of turning around on this all too narrow path. There IS another exit from here but that leads right into mid-air and with high probability of a free fall session afterwards.

The Broad ledge

You are standing on a ledge that seems quite a lot larger than the rest of the ledges. This one leads to the west and the east, plus it has an exit going to the south. Though you could jump into mid-air, but it probably wouldn't be such a good idea. The way south is in utter darkness.

The northeastern corner of the ledge

You stand, swaying out from the ledge, with only a couple of inches of safe, solid ledge under your feet. The ledge continues to the west and leads south from here into darkness.

The narrow eastern ledge

You are in the progress of walking all the way around the ledge since there's no way of turning around on this all too narrow path. There IS another exit from here but that leads right into mid-air and with high probability of a free fall session afterwards. And THAT is west of here so watch your step. You also see a small opening to the east.

The southeastern corner of the ledge

This seems like a ledge that is a little broader than the one just to the north of here. The ledge seems to lead around some sort of abyss of total darkness.

Under the Pipes

This cavern is dimly lit with a pale light filtering up from a recently collapsed floor. Up above is the top of the pipe, and the walls slope, making it an easy climb. Off to the west the cavern narrows as it heads towards a tunnel

Under The Shaft

A ladder leads up from here to the Shaft. A small opening leads west from here.

The sewer line.

You are in a narrow part of the sewer. Down the sewer continues and to the north is the ledge.

The sewer pipe.

You are in an odd sewer pipe. You see some odd scratches on the pipe wall, as from a gigantic rat. You can see some slimy water gently running down into a sewer drain, and north the drain continues.

A narrow pipe

This narrow stretch of pipe is barely wide enough to squeeze through, and something has scratched long grooves into its curved walls. To the west the worn stones of an old well show at the end of the pipe, and to the east it opens into a junction.

The sewer pipe

Cold water drips steadily from a crack in the roof of the pipe and runs away along the floor in a thin, dirty stream. The pipe leads north and south.

A slimy pipe

The walls of the pipe are slick with a greenish slime that glistens in your light, and the stench here is enough to make your eyes water. The pipe goes on to the north and to the south.

A cracked pipe

Part of the pipe wall has given way here, and a heap of broken brick lies half sunk in the muck. Squeezing past it, you can go north or south.

A short passage

Your head is still spinning as you stumble along this short passage. The floor is dry rock, and behind you there is only smooth stone: the way leads on east, into a small room.

A rough tunnel

The ledge gives way here to a rough tunnel cut into the rock, its walls wet with trickling water. To the north it opens onto the ledge above the chasm; to the south it leads deeper into the stone.

A hewn passage

This passage was hewn straight through the bedrock, and the marks of the picks are still plain on its walls. It leads west to an odd intersection, and east towards a pale light.

Mid-air

You've just stepped into the most unlucky position in the whole of DikuMUD. The result of such a foolish act should be punished with death, you know. With an acceleration of approximately 9.82 metres per second per second, you are now descending the Abyss. What awaits you at the bottom will continue to be a mystery. Bye Cruel World.

The rock can be climbed upwards from here.
