Har Meggido - Translated from Hebrew, it means "The Plane of Armageddon". It looks to be a fitting name for the place. Nothing but flatlands stretching as far as the eye can see, and much further beyond. Blasted rocks, trees, shrubbery, and rubble is strewn all over, and covering most of the ground are corpses of various beings of all races, in the never ending battle that takes place here. The tide seems to turn every five minutes.
This is the entrance to a murky and dark swamp. A light mist surrounds everything in sight, giving the place a hazy look. There are trees everywhere, but even the great number of them cannot keep down the level of the water, which would be waist high on an average human. The water looks shallower in some parts, allowing passage to other areas of the swamp. Off in the distance, one can hear a faint buzzing noise.
The scene rarely changes as one treads deeper into the swamp. All around, the same trees and plants grow, and the same murky water fills the place. Off in the distance, the same buzzing noise continues to drone, non-stop.
The mist is beginning to thicken at this point in the swamp. There is little around to keep interest in, as it seems that the scenery just repeats every few yards. The water continues to stay deep, making movement a pain, and the buzzing noise continues on.
The swamp seems to get a little shallower, and now the trees look like they are beginning to thin out. The mist is definitely beginning to get much thicker, turning now into more of a fog than a mist, thick enough to continue to make everything hazy, but not enough to hinder vision. Not only does the buzzing noise continue, but there is also an occasional splash.
The swamp seems to go on forever. Nothing but mist and trees and murky water and more trees. The buzzing sound continues on non-stop, as well as the splashing noise.
The swamp only continues to thicken, as well as the mist and the thickness of the muck. The trees keep going in a constant repeating pattern. The buzzing noise drones on.
The swamp keeps going on and on and on. The mist keeps getting thicker, with nothing seeming to break the repetitiveness of the scenery. The constant buzzing and occasional splashing only serve to add to the monotony of the place.
The swamp continues to stretch on as far as the eye can see. In fact, the only thing that makes this part of the swamp seem different from the others is the amount of mist here, now turning into fog. The buzzing sound in the distance continues to grow louder.
The monotonous scenery of the swamp continues on in all directions. The only change appears to be the fog, which continues to thicken as one heads further into the heart of the swamp. The buzzing sound continues to grow louder with every step.
There seems to be no end in sight for the swamp. Nothing but trees, fog, and muck as far as the eyes can see. All around, the water and mud flows, making footing treacherous. The fog still thickens, and the buzzing still grows louder.
The fog and the trees continue to thicken, adding to the general unpleasantness of this place. The water and muck continues to flow and shift, and the buzzing continues to grow louder.
At this four-way intersection, the large wooden wall curves and continues to head further into the swamp. The mist thins out a little as it heads towards the wall, and the buzzing sound that was once prominent in the background is now fading out a little.
The path here runs to the north and to the south, following a large, wooden wall. The mist is practically non existent here, but the buzzing sound is still prominent in the background.
The mist here drops off sharply, becoming almost non existent, allowing one to see the large wall a short way off to the east. A large gate can be seen in the wall, with several forms moving on the far side. The buzzing sound now seems to be competing with a hissing sound that comes from inside the wall.
Immediately to the east lies the large gates to a walled village. The walls are a direct result of the harsh swamp environment and the creatures that live in it. From inside the walls, one can hear several hissing sounds, like a form of communication. From over the walls, several lizardmen peer out into the swamp, as if they are looking for something.
As one passes through the gates to this village, they are hissed at by several large lizardmen carrying primitive weapons of stone, bone, and wood. They scan over any strangers, looking for almost any reason to start hostilities. From inside the village, the hissing sound grows louder, drowning out the buzzing sound of the swamp.
This looks to be the center of the village. Surrounding this wide open area are squat huts of mud and straw. Lizardmen of various sizes and ages scurry all about, stopping only to hiss at each other for a few moments before continuing with their work. A path that looks in better condition than the rest of the ones in this village leads off to the east.
This hut is filled with various primitive weapons like stone spears and bone clubs. It would appear that this is where all weapons currently not in use are stored. Lizardmen sit in this room, keeping a lazy eye over the weapons, while an occasional other lizardman wanders in to grab something or drop something off.
The odor from this hut makes it obvious that this is where all garbage is thrown out. The stench is almost overpowering. Mounds of garbage just fill up this hut. For a second there, it looked like one of those piles of trash was moving...
The path widens and reaches an intersection. Off to the south rises a hut that looks better built and better kept than the rest of the huts in the village. To the north lies another hut, smaller than the hut to the south, but still pretty well built and kept.
The inside of this hut is mostly barren. Crammed into one corner is a stone table with bowls of herbs and murky liquids, most of which smell vile and probably taste worse. Wandering about the room boredly is usually found an elder lizardman.
This is a very large hut from the outside. It's still made of straw and mud, though one might wonder how it stays up from its size. Hissing sounds can be heard inside almost nonstop.
The interior of this hut doesn't say much about its inhabitants. It is totally barren, except for a mat of straw in the middle. Lizardmen are constantly scurrying in and out, constantly talking in their hissing tongue.
The east-west path here follows the wall around the village. The ground seems to get a little more firm underfoot, and the buzzing noise continues to fade out into the distance.
While the ground seems to be a little firmer, and the water has drained a little bit, it is still very mucky around here, making movement a little tiring. The mist has dropped away completely, as has the buzzing sound.
The swamp continues to spread in all directions. While there is no mist and no buzzing sound, there is still plenty of muck and trees to go around. The path continues to the east and the west, following the large wall, and also breaks off to the north.
Here, the large wall now hits another curve and bends south, into an area that is so thick with trees that a person cannot follow. The only way out of here is back to the west.
The path runs north-south, a short distance from the wall that surrounds the village. The wall is very sturdy, made from wood, mud, rocks, and anything else the villagers could seem to get together. The mist is now reappearing, and the hissing noise still competes with the buzzing noise, though now it seems the buzzing is beginning to win out.
The swamp now gets thicker here. The wall seems to stop the drainage of water into another part of the swamp, so the ground here is very muddy. Combined with the water, it makes foot travel rather annoying. The mist continues to grow, along with the buzzing sound, now that the hissing is all but gone here.
The path curves here... actually, it's more like the flow of water shows a path that curves. With the mist and the buzzing, the only way one can figure out where the path changes is by the feel of the water.
The path here seems to follow the direction of the large wall, though it is no longer in sight, being blocked out by the trees. The path continues to the east and the west. The buzzing sound now seems distant.
The path continues to run to the east and the west. The trees seem to grow a little sparse here, but there is still no end to the mist or the buzzing sound in the distance.
The trees here continue to thin out, but the water, muck and mist continue to hang around, making the area generally unpleasant. The path continues to the east, where the buzzing seems to get louder, and to the west.
At this point in the swamp, the trees suddenly get thicker, blocking all forward progress. There's enough space between the trees for water to flow, but that's just about it. The only way out of here is back to the west.
Right here, the fog seems to suddenly drop away, as if it hit a wall and just stopped dead in its tracks. The ground seems to get a little more solid also, and a faint hissing noise can be heard off to the west.
The only break in the wall is the gate right here. It is rather large, and looks powerful enough to take on a decent number of attackers. From on top of the wall, on either side of the gate, one can see a lizardman or two looking out over the swamp. There is a faint hissing noise from the other side of the wall.
On the other side of the wall is a small village. All around, there are only lizardmen. Some of them look armed and ready for some sort of attack. But more often than not, most of the lizardmen aren't wearing anything, and walking around with children or junk. There are a few clumps of buildings straight ahead on dry ground, while to the right and left, there are two small towers that just barely peek over the wall.
The guard tower is simply a small wooden structure with some steps and a platform. It is from here that the lizardmen in this village keep an eye out for any signs of an impending attack. The platform is rickety, making balance a necessity if one doesn't want to plunge to a massive headache.
The guard tower is simply a small wooden structure with some steps and a platform. It is from here that the lizardmen in this village keep an eye out for any signs of an impending attack. The platform is rickety, making balance a necessity if one doesn't want to plunge to a massive headache.
This hut is larger than the rest of the huts in the square, but not by much. In the middle of the hut is a table with herbs and strips of cloth on it. A few beds of straw are lying about.
The center of the village is high enough so that it is dry ground. It is mostly surrounded by clay huts that house the residents of this village. On either side of the square, though, there are larger huts, presumably shops of some sort. Off to the west is a dry path leading to an even larger hut.
This hut is divided into a few sections. Most of them are filled up with eggs, some larger than others. Some of them are so new that they are still covered with some slimy substance. Every once in a while, one of the larger eggs starts to crack, and a few of the lizardmen in the room immediately rush over to it.
The dry walk leads up to a large hut. A curtain covers the entrance to the hut, not permitting anyone to look inside. Usually found outside are a few lizardmen, dressed and armed for battle. Occasionally from inside the hut, a hissing noise can be heard.
The inside of the chief's hut can be described as nicely decorated for a clay hut. A few trophies of kills can be seen lining the walls. The most noticeable thing in the room is the straw mat in the middle, upon which the chief of the village sits. Sometimes, a citizen comes into the hut and speaks with the chief in hissing tones for a few minutes before leaving.
To the west is a large wall made of logs tied together and stuck into the ground like poles. Simple, yet strong enough that it would take a decent sized attack force and some shovels to break through. The wall continues to the south, where it looks like a path leads inside, and to the north, where it curves west into the swamp through a tiny break in the trees.
The trees begin to thin out in this direction, and the water appears to be dropping off slightly. The mist still remains as thick as ever. The buzzing continues to drone on and on.
The swamp continues to thicken as one progresses into the heart. The buzzing and splashing sounds continue to grow louder, as the mist continues to grow heavier, still not obstructing view, but making long distance sight a pain.
The swamp now begins to thin out. The water now only comes up to about mid-shin on an average human, and it looks like the mist is beginning to thin out as well. One can definitely make out clear paths leading in several directions.
The water level has lowered enough here that one can walk around on muddy ground without worry of water seeping into boots and such. The mist is almost non-existent here, but the trees are still many and bunched together, though it looks like that a bunch of them have fallen down to the east.
The ground gets more solid near this clump of fallen trees. Most of these dead trees are still solid and strong, though a few of them look like they've been hollowed out. From inside one of the larger logs, a strange hissing sound can be heard, slightly louder than the buzzing sound off in the distance.
This is the inside of a very large log. It looks like something has been making camp here, as there are the remnants of a campfire here, and what looks like some skeletons of some small animals. A few furs lie discarded in a pile off to the side.
At this point, the swamp has almost become dry ground. The water now only reaches the ankle of an average human. The ground still feels very muddy, but the mist continues to thin out, as well as some of the trees. The buzzing sound is not as loud in this area.
Surprisingly, in this small part of the swamp, there is no water on the ground. In fact, this area is almost totally clear of trees and mist. The ground is still a little muddy, and the mist still lingers lightly, but it is easy to walk around here.
This part of the clearing is just as firm as the rest. The grass, the trees that form the boundary, and even the occasional rock peering up from the ground. It looks like the remnants of a campfire lie in a circle of stones, and the smell of wood smoke permeates the immediate area.
This part of the clearing is totally solid ground. There are actually some rocks peering up from the ground, over the level of the fallen leaves. The wall of trees is still as thick as ever.
This part of the clearing is a little dryer than the rest, with grass sprouting up in a few spots. Occasional leaves drop from the thick wall of trees that make up the boundary of the area. The buzzing sound is almost nonexistent out here.
This part of the swamp is clearly a dead end. It is ringed on three sides by trees, barely visible through the fog unless one puts their nose right up against the tree. The water here is about waist high on an average human, hindering movement slightly. The buzzing sound is quite loud here.
To the west is a wall made of logs. All tied together, and stuck into the ground like poles. It is strong enough to shrug off almost anything the swamp can throw at it, so the beings that live inside do not have to worry about attackers. To the north, one can see a break in the wall. The path also continues to the south, following the wall around the enclosed area.
This is the corner of a large wooden wall. The wall heads off to the north, following a well trodden path, and to the west, deeper into the swamp. The buzzing sound here is quite loud.
A large wooden wall lies a short distance to the north, running east-west across the swamp. If one listens very carefully, one can hear a faint hissing noise through all the buzzing. A faint trail continues to the east and to the west.
The wooden wall to the north continues to stretch in both directions along this trail. There seems to be no break in either the wall, or the buzzing sound that can be heard, though the buzzing is now growing a little fainter.
This seems to be a familiar sight: A large, wooden wall running east-west, next to a trail that runs in the same directions. The buzzing sound, while softer than before, is still prominent in the background.
At this point in the swamp, the wall hits a corner and curves off to the north, into a dense pack of trees that is quite impassable. In fact, this whole place seems to be a dead end. The path leads back to the east, towards the buzzing sounds.
The swamp seems to get a little more solid here, and the mist looks like it is beginning to thin out. The buzzing is definitely much louder here, the source obviously nearby. The path branches off to the south, and also continues to the east and the west.
The path once again becomes a t-intersection, heading off to the south, east and west. The mist stays about the same consistency here, with no decrease in the volume of the buzzing noise.
This is one of the many traversable t-intersections in this swamp. It branches off to the south, and continues to the east and the west. The mist here remains rather thick, and the buzzing sound continues to stay painfully loud.
The fog continues to grow thick, and the buzzing continues to increase. The swamp has absolutely no end in sight. Off to the east, it seems that the trees grow larger, and it is also in that direction that the buzzing gets louder, obviously pointing to the source.
The fog really begins to get thick here. Vision seems to be slightly impaired, but it is still easy to pick out any movement in the distance. The buzzing sound now really seems to get loud here.
The swamp continues to stretch in all directions. Not a single break can be seen in the trees. If it wasn't for the fog and the buzzing, this part of the swamp would seem exactly like the rest. If one can listen carefully, they can hear a slight hissing off in the distance.
The trees ringing this part of the swamp prevent anyone from exiting in any direction except the way they came in. The mist here grows a little thinner, but the buzzing sound is quite loud. Above, there appears to be the entrance to some sort of a hive, but there are no trees close enough to be able to climb to it.
The trees grow extremely thick in this swamp. So thick, in fact, that there is only one way out, and that is the way one got into this part. The mist dims sight a little, and the buzzing noise is almost unbearable, but above, one can see the entrance to a large hive. There are trees near the entrance that look strong enough to climb.
The swamp continues to spread off in all directions. The buzzing sound is almost to the deafening point here, and the mist seems to be completely gone. The path heads off to the north and the south.
At this point, the path ends at the base of a clump of trees. The source of the buzzing is right nearby, as the sound is deafening here. Though the path heads off to the north, it appears that some of the trees here are climbable, offering another way out.
This is obviously the source of the buzzing that has been resonating throughout the swamp. This is the entrance to a very large hive of some kind of flying insect. They can be seen constantly flying in and out of the hive. The buzzing sound is so loud that it is hard to hear things.
At this point in the swamp, the trees clear up enough to clearly define a path. It runs to the west, and to the south. The mist seems to be thicker in the south, but otherwise, this looks like every other part of the swamp.
The path here runs off to the east and the west, through areas that are pretty much clear of trees. The water flows easily and shallowly over muddy ground, and the mist here is very light.
The path comes to a T-intersection here in the swamp. There is a dense clump of trees here, putting an indentation into the intersection, but in no other way blocking the path.
The swamp continues to grow a little firmer here, but is still rather mucky. The trees now are spaced in such a way that they form something of a path, so one does not have to follow the feel of the water.
This appears to be the source of all the buzzing in the swamp. A large insect hive has been constructed here. All the time, insects can be seen flying in and out of the hive, doing stuff that they are supposed to do.
This small chamber appears to be newly constructed. No insects are in here, and almost no cells are constructed. The passage out runs to the west.
The inside of the hive looks like one might expect. The walls are covered with hexagonal cells, some of them capped with wax, some of them filled with other stuff. Insects can be seen all the time buzzing around, doing things important to them. The entrance to the hive leads outside, and another passage leads further in.
This is a small chamber within the hive. Only a few insects fly in or out at times. The rest of the time, this chamber appears to be empty. The only way out is to the south.
This little section of the hive is mostly just an intersection. It is here that a north-south passage branches off and runs to the east. Insects can be seen flying down the passages, off to do whatever it is that they do.
This is one of the larger chambers in the hive. Honeycomb cells are all about, with insects buzzing from one to another, doing stuff that insects like them do. Passages run in all four directions.
This is a small chamber in the hive. It is mostly barren, with partially constructed honeycomb cells in here. An occasional insect wanders in and out, but that's pretty much it.
This is one of the many dead ends that seems to be cropping up all over this hive. Eggs seem to be gathered here. The only way out is the passage to the north.
This appears to be the center of the hive. It is the largest chamber seen so far, and one of the busiest too. Insects, both larger and smaller ones, are seen flying about, tending to their daily duties. Passages run off in all directions, with the one to the north also looking to be a tight fit.
The tunnel runs to both the north and the south. Insects can be seen continually flying in both directions. The buzzing sound has now reached almost deafening proportions, and the source seems to be to the north.
This is another dead end here in the hive. This looks to be a room where larger insects tend to gather. All of them buzz about, waiting for something unknown to happen. The only way out is the tunnel back to the south.
This little section of the hive seems to be a gathering room. In here, usually one can find lots of smaller wasps buzzing around, as if waiting for instructions. The only way out of here is the path to the north.
The hive continues to spread out, obviously since there are a lot of insects in here. Hexagonal cells lie all about, filled with larvae and other stuff that one wouldn't recognize unless they were a sage. Passages lead off in all four major directions, though the passage to the north looks to be a tight fit.
This tunnel is rather small, even for the size of the insects here. It leads to the north and to the south, following the directions of the honeycomb cells.
This is definitely the nerve center of the whole hive. There are insects all over this chamber, and they seem to be circling one big insect that sits in the middle. The buzzing is quite unbearable in this room. The only way out is the tunnel to the south.
The hive is full of life... literally buzzing with it. Insects can be seen flying all about, doing varying tasks that one would imagine insects must do in order to maintain a hive. Through all of the hexagonal cells, one can see a clearly defined path that leads further into the hive. There is an entrance here that leads outside.
