Lore
In the game: help lore
A lore is knowing one kind of creature. Each works by itself when you consider a monster of that kind: you are told what it seems to be, and get an estimate of how it compares to you. The better you know the lore, the more it tells:
- Any: its hit points and armor class, compared to yours.
- Above 60%: how many attacks it has.
- Above 70%: how much damage they do.
- Above 80%: its to-hit and damage bonuses.
The estimates are rough when you know the lore a little, and close when you know it well. Knowing several lores of one creature, the best one counts.
| Lore | Creatures |
|---|---|
| Animal Lore | Beasts of every kind: wolves, bears, great cats, horses, birds, fish, rodents, apes, snakes and other reptiles, insects and spiders |
| Vegetable Lore | Walking trees and plant-men, fungi and moulds, slimes, slugs and parasites |
| Necromancy | Zombies, skeletons, ghouls, ghasts, wights, spectres, vampires, liches and ghosts |
| Demonology | Demons and devils |
| Reptile Lore | Dragons, lizardmen, troglodytes, snakes, amphibians and dinosaurs |
| People Lore | Humans and demi-humans: elves (drow too), dwarves, halflings, gnomes, goblins, centaurs, lizardmen, lycanthropes, mind flayers, tieflings and the like |
| Giant Lore | Giants, ogres, trolls, orcs and half-orcs, gnolls, bugbears, minotaurs, golems and titans |
| Other Lore | Elementals, golems, lycanthropes, mind flayers, planar beings, will-o'-wisps and other monsters |
No class learns the lores with its levels: teachers out in the world teach them, for gold, each up to a limit. From there you get better by using them: now and then, considering a creature a lore knows teaches you a little more of it, up to 95%. The Character pane's Skills tab lists them under Other, with who teaches each and where.
