Chat
In the game: help channels
Talking to other players is one chat system, beside the game: no moves, no languages, and sleep or a silenced room don't stop it. The Chat pane lists the channels down its side; open one to read it and write in it.
| Here | everyone in the room with you (say, ') |
| Group | your group, wherever they are (gtell) |
| Zone | everyone in your zone; it follows you (gossip) |
| Global | everyone playing (global, shout) |
| Newbie | questions about playing, answered by anyone (newbie) |
| Private | one player, anywhere (tell <name>, reply) |
From the main window, @name and #channel send a line: @bob on my way, #global anyone for Moria? A chip then keeps your plain lines going there until you clear it (Esc), and /look runs one game command. A fight clears the chip, so your lines are commands again.
Each channel's "main window" switch shows it in the main window too, so you can follow it while you play. Leaving a channel (the pane, or nogossip, notell, deafen) stops it reaching you.
Channels have rate limits instead of costs: talk too fast, or say the same thing twice, and the chat asks you to wait.
To change something you said, hover over your message in the Chat pane (tap it on a phone) and choose Edit or Delete; ↑ in an empty chat box edits your last one. Everyone who has it sees the change; an edited message says "(edited)".
To show someone an item, drag it from your Inventory into the chat box (drag it over the Chat tab to open it, if it is behind the Gear tab). Its name goes into your message, and in the message it is a link: anyone can click it to see what the item is, as identify shows it. You can also type {{keyword}} for something you carry, as '{{sword}}'. Editing a message turns its items back into plain names.
Private conversations are kept between visits (see TELL). The channels start empty each time you enter the game; if your connection drops and you come back, what was said meanwhile is there.
