Items
In the game: help item
Weapons, armor, potions, scrolls, bags, food, keys: everything you can pick up is an item (also called an object, or equipment, EQ for short).
Getting them
- Monsters carry and wear them: kill one and its things are in its corpse ("get all corpse", or see AUTO-LOOT).
- Shops sell them ("list", "buy"), and buy them back ("sell", "value").
- The ground: some lie in rooms, waiting to be found ("get <item>").
- Quests and bounties pay in them too.
Things come back when their zone resets, every so often: monsters return with their gear and what lay on the ground is put back. Some things come back only so far, though (Limited and one-of-a-kind, below).
Using them
- "wear", "wield" and "hold" put things on; "remove" takes them off; "swap" changes one for another in the same place.
- "quaff" a potion, "recite" a scroll, "use" a wand or staff, "eat" and "drink".
- "inventory" and "equipment" (or the Character pane's Gear tab) show what you carry and wear. Click an item there for its card: what it is, what it does, whether you can use it and why not, and Compare to set it beside what you wear.
- "identify" tells you everything about an item, free and at once (see IDENTIFY).
- Not everyone can use everything: some items are barred to classes, an alignment, men or women, or serve only some levels. The card and IDENTIFY say which.
- What you wear and wield wears down in fights; a repairman mends it (see REPAIR).
The Item Database (a link under the message of the day on the character list, or /items on the game's web address) lists every item in the world, with which monsters and shops have it.
Keeping them
Everything you carry and wear is kept for you when you leave the game, free, however you leave (QUIT, RENT, or just closing the window). Two exceptions:
- Unrentable things, such as keys, can't be kept: they are left on the ground when you leave.
- Limited things go back into the world if you stay away more than 30 days (below).
Your house chest (see HOUSES) keeps things too, but not everything: see below.
Rarity is not the same as limited
Every piece of gear has a rarity, shown by the colour of its icon's border: poor (grey), common, uncommon (green), rare (blue), epic (purple), legendary (orange). Rarity is how good the item is for how hard it is to get. Limited and one-of-a-kind are about how many copies the world allows. They are separate: a limited item can be of any rarity, and a legendary one need not be limited.
Limited items
Some items the world holds only so many of. IDENTIFY marks them LIMITED. (An item that rents for over 10,000 coins a day counts as limited too.)
- The world limit. A zone reset makes a new copy only while fewer than that many exist. Every copy counts: in the world, in a corpse, in a shop, on any player, and kept by players who are away (for up to 30 days).
- Away more than 30 days. Your limited things go back into the world for someone else to find, and you are told which when you return. Anything they held (a limited bag's contents) is given back to you. Your other things stay yours however long you are away.
- Not in house chests. A chest is always in the world, so a limited item kept there would never go back. The chest hands it back to you.
- When you rent, the receptionist tells you how many limited things you carry.
One-of-a-kind items
Many items, limited or not, are put back by their zone only while no other copy is in the world: the famous sword a boss carries, the orb in a certain room. While one copy is about, the next monster or room comes back without it.
- A player away doesn't block it. For a limited item, a copy kept by a player who is logged off doesn't stop the zone putting another back (the world limit is still the ceiling). So someone away with it doesn't keep it from everyone else.
- An item with no world limit is different: a copy kept by a player who is away still counts, since that is all that holds its number down.
- Not in house chests either, for the same reason as limited things: a copy in a chest would keep it from turning up for anyone. The chest hands it back to you. (Keys are the exception.) IDENTIFY doesn't mark one-of-a-kind items; the chest tells you when you try.
Be fair
Keep what you use and a few spares. Hoarding limited or one-of-a-kind gear keeps it from other players (see RULES).
